The third story in “Junk Food Mums” is about a 37 stone lady who is very proud to be a plus size. Sharon has a massive chocolate addiction and falls into the realms of super obese. She genuinely believes you can be a plus size and be happy. She claims that if she was a size 12 she would be a drawn whippet and has no interest in getting gastric bypass surgery.
Sharon lives with her size 20 stepdaughter who she has brought up as her own. Her stepdaughter is called Kate and is seventeen years old.
When her stepdaughter is quizzed about the vast amounts of chocolate both consume it is very interesting to see how she describes chocolate. She says that it releases endorphins which makes the pair of them happy.
Within the next year Sharon is going to marry Kate’s Dad who she met through a chat room for big people. She plans on losing weight for the wedding and has so far gone from 41 stone to 37 stone but seems to have stayed at that weight. Even the whole theme of the wedding is based around her love of chocolate as a day with a wedding planner reveals the famous purple cadburys colour is going to be the centrepiece colour of the wedding.
It is very interesting to note people’s reactions to both Sharon and Kate when both are out and about shopping in Cheltenham. They quickly realise that shopping for super sized people is very difficult. The UK really isn’t equipped for supersize shopping compared to America which really caters for serious plus sizes.
What becomes apparent very quickly is that there are no bridesmaids dresses that Kate can fit into. Even the ones that she is close to squeezing into are pretty horrific with regards to style and fashion. They have to go elsewhere to try and find them and they constantly seem to be out of breath.
When they both leave the shop to go elsewhere, they are stared at by everybody and have foul abusive language hurled at them. People constantly seem to be laughing at them. The insults fly non-stop and it even prompts Sharon to say “It’s as if I’m some kind of freak show that its OK to stare at”. Kate seems to get very upset and is very tempted to say something back to the abusive crowd but Sharon convinces her not to stop to their level.
Sharon and Kate also appeared on ITVs Good Morning Show which was presented by Eamon Holmes. They were featuring in a segment called “Britains Fattest Bride”. Even Eamon Holmes couldn’t suppress a smug smile when he saw Sharon in the wedding dress.
The whole point of appearing on the show was that Sharon would receive her wedding dress for free if she plugged the name of the company on the show. Whilst on the show Eamon Holmes brought up the topic of babies, Sharon admitted that her GP had told her than she would need to get down to 18 stone at least before she could contemplate having a child, so she would have to lose nearly 20 stone.
The following day herself and Kate went online to see what the feedback would be from the show. It was pretty mixed by all accounts. Many people said that she was really pretty whilst others were far more disparaging.
Some of the comments were
“There’s nothing beautiful about being a heart attack on legs”
“Fat people shouldn’t be allowed to have sex, what a disgusting thought”
“How can anyone think that its healthy, she weighs three times more than the average woman”
“If you want to be fat that’s up to you as long as you’re not squished next to me on a plane”
Many other comments picked up on the kids issue, that Sharon can’t have any at her current size. This is the one topic that really gets to Sharon as she desperately wants to have kids.
Even Kate realises that its time to talk to Sharon about her weight situation. She tells Sharon that she may not make it to 60 and that scares her a lot. Kate tries to push the Gastric Bypass Surgery but Sharon is having none of it. She is adamant that she wants to try and lose the weight herself before the wedding then she might contemplate surgery.
