When you picture Opera Singers you most likely think of Luciano Pavarotti or Placido Domingo. These are larger than life characters who we assumed ate and drank like kings and queens.

One such opera singer has decided to take a different approach to losing weight. David Webb was the archetypal opera singer. He weighed 19 stone and had 40% body fat. Within 6 months though he managed to lose 5 stone just by changing the way he ate as well as doing 12 minutes of exercise a day.

His operatic group are called Amore and consist of Peter Braithwaite, Victoria Gray and Monica McGhee. David realised that if he was to be a successful operatic singer he had to get into shape as all his fellow band members were all very fit.

Throughout his teenage years David was Pretty active playing a lot of rugby and football. It was only when his parents divorced that he began to pile in the pounds. It was only when he finished school and joined a choir that he began to put on the weight. Working in a bakery certainly did not help as the temptation of walnut pastries along with many slices of buttered toast was just too tempting.

Now though he las lost 5 stone by following the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet eliminated all sugary foods and high fat foods. He now eats far more unprocessed foods with lots of protein. Combined with this is his exercise regime where he works out for only 10-20 minutes a day. These exercises are admittedly pretty intense where in a 20 minute time frame you have to do 50 24kg kettlebell swings, 70 Burmese, 60 sit ups, 40 pull-ups and 30 handstand pressups.

One of David’s secrets is what he calls his “Fatterday”. This is where he is allowed to eat whatever he likes.

It seems as if he has a legion of followers now that he has lost all this weight judging by the comments on the Daily Mail web site.

If you have a big surgery approaching then it may make sense to change your diet in the weeks leading up to the surgery. A study carried out on mice at Brigham and Women’s hospital has shown that switching to a low fat diet can change the way fat reacts to surgery.

This is based on two ideas that haven been receiving a lot of coverage in the press recently. Firstly, evidence is pointing to the fact that changing ones diet in the long term such as eating a low calorie diet helps to prolong life in mice. Secondly fat has been shown to be important for health as it release hormones and other chemicals which help the body to maintain balance as well as being important for the immune system.

The three groups of mice involved in the study were on three different diets. One was on a low fat diet, the other on a high fat diet and the third placed on the low fat diet three weeks prior to surgery.

The outcome was quite interesting as fat behaved differently in each case. In the high fat group inflamed genes were very active when compared to the mice on the low fat diet. The mice that had eaten the low fat diet for 3 weeks had fat which behaved more like the fat tissue in mice that had been raised only on a low fat diet. This suggests that even though it was only a temporary change it had a positive effect.

This backs up what Valter Longo who is a professor of Gerontolgy at USC believes. He is studying the role fasting plays in chemotherapy and his findings to date have shown that fasting offers protection form the side effects of cancer drugs.

The next step is to move the study onto people.

Back in 1999 there was a class action settlement for a diet drug called Fen-Phen. The payout was for $3.5 billion. However, it now seems that many of these claims were bogus.

Many of these claims were made by Dr Abdur Razzak Tai who was a cardiologist baed in Florida. Every time he certified one of his patients with having heart damage as a result of them taking the drug it invariably lead to a six figure payout.

Over time auditors disqualified more than ninety percent of the certifications that Tai had made and eventually the FBI paid a visit. Tai wasnt the only person to benefit from all these fraudulent claims apparently. A Missouri cardiologist in 2006 as well as a Texas doctor in 2005 had managed to pocket hundreds of thousands for themselves due to the fraudulent claims they had made on behalf of their patients.

The 79 yr old cardiologist is in very poor health and was using this in the hope of getting a reduced sentence. The judge in question however did not accept this as a valid reason for spending less time in jail.

Tai is only expected to live for a couple of years. The recommended sentence he received was for 84 months.

Nobody seems to know exactly how much the Cardiologist netted from his fraudulent scheme although some estimate that it may be as much as a few million dollars.

It has only been in the last few years that I have actively been paying attention to food labels. In years gone by I had no concept of the amount of calories I should be consuming on a daily basis or the amount of calories in each particular food that I was eating. If somebody had asked me how many calories were in a bag of crisps I would have said 100 whereas the actual figure is a lot more than that.

On most labels the calorie contents, recommended serving size and nutritional values appear in black and white. Most people I know have no idea how to read it so here are a few tips for making sure you do it the right way.

Start at the top which will normally mention calorie content and serving size. Be careful though when you are reading it as most bottle of juice and snacks have more than one serving in the package.

Look at the nutrient panel which usually appears in the middle of the label. You will find out how many milligrams or grams of a particular nutrient are in a food. The best way of looking at this is that if you know the recommended amount of protein you should be consuming a day is 40g and if you read the label and it says 20g then you know you have consumed half of the recommended amount.

The ingredients part of the label tells you a lot as well. Generally speaking, the most heavily used ingredient is the one that appears first. So if you see sugar you can bet your bottom dollar that sugar is the predominant ingredient.

If we think of all of the meals we consume on a daily basis, the least likely one that we consume protein in is probably breakfast. I know for many years my breakfast consisted of a coupe of pieces of toast or one of those cereals like Weetabix or Shreddies.

Nowadays however my breakfast is more likely to consist of porridge and a hard boiled egg or a combination of cottage cheese, an apple, banana and satsuma mixed together topped off with some cinnamon and some ginger. The protein in these breakfasts is the hard boiled egg and the cottage cheese.

Breakfast is he most important mean in the day but did you know that sixty percent of Americans miss it. A study carried out by Heather Leidy who is an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition & Exercise believes that consuming a high protein breakfast improves the control of ones appetite and also helps to reduce unhealthy snacking on high fat or high sugar foods in the evening time.

In her study twenty overweight people aged 18-20 either missed breakfast, ate a high protein breakfast or ate a normal breakfast. Those who ate the high protein breakfast did not have the same cravings as the two other test groups.

So if you are looking for foods to eat for a high protein breakfast then egg based foods are always a good choice. Cottage cheese and Greek Yogurt are also great as well which will help you to achieve the daily recommended amount of 35 grammes of protein.

I’m not sure if this will mean that the floodgates will open for weight loss surgery but if you heard that weight loss surgery may boost testosterone would you be interested in having it done ?

It seems however that this focuses in specifically on morbidly obese men. In a study carried out by the University of Florence in Italy levels of sex hormones were shown to have increased after Bariatric surgery. In many cases the levels were even higher than expected.

Bariatric surgery has been shown to also improve insulin resistance, hypertension and glucose intolerance. Admittedly it was a small sample size and further studies are needed.

However it will send out a strong signal to many morbidly obese people who are considering having the surgery done. If their sex drive is likely to increase as a result of Bariatric surgery I expect there will no no shortage of people choosing this route.

Fancy doing a one day diet instead of all the complicated other diets out there on the market. You don’t have to fast, drink juice diets or do any forms of detox in order to improve your health and lose weight.

Lets assume you have had a heavy weekend of bingeing and you just fancy dropping a couple of pounds. Here are a handful of tips you can try strait away which can help you get back on track towards eating healthily.

1. You need to keep track of what you are eating. Writing it down or using one of the many apps on a smartphone can easily help you to do this.

2. If you are not already a morning eater then I recommend you become one. Don’t skip breakfast. Try these combinations of a big greasy fry up. You could have a granola bar and a piece of fruit, a banana and a hard boiled egg, dried fruit and nuts, banana slices and whole grain cereal.

3. Eat rainbow foods. What this means is eating foods which are the colour of the rainbow every day. Yesterday I had cottage cheese, banana, apple and an orange all in the one bowl. I also ate celery, nuts as well as a soup for dinner which had Cannellini beans, bacon, and celery in it.

4. Try to fill the gap between meals. Some people leave a lot of time in between meals which means that when meal time arrives they will choose less healthy meal choices. As a rule of thumb I get around this by eating small portions every four hours so am rarely hungry in between meals. If you do feel the need to snack then you are far better off going for a celery stick or carrot with some hummus or a handful of peanuts instead of a chocolate bar.

5. As I mentioned above you are far better off eating smaller portions of food. Choosing smaller portions which have sugar and added fats will leave space for more nutrient rich vegetables, fruits and other foods.

6. Full fat foods often taste a lot better than low fat or reduced fat foods. There is nothing wrong with eating full fat bacon, butter, cheese or cream but he secret is to do it in moderation.

The third story in “Junk Food Mums” is about a 37 stone lady who is very proud to be a plus size. Sharon has a massive chocolate addiction and falls into the realms of super obese. She genuinely believes you can be a plus size and be happy. She claims that if she was a size 12 she would be a drawn whippet and has no interest in getting gastric bypass surgery.

Sharon lives with her size 20 stepdaughter who she has brought up as her own. Her stepdaughter is called Kate and is seventeen years old.

When her stepdaughter is quizzed about the vast amounts of chocolate both consume it is very interesting to see how she describes chocolate. She says that it releases endorphins which makes the pair of them happy.

Within the next year Sharon is going to marry Kate’s Dad who she met through a chat room for big people. She plans on losing weight for the wedding and has so far gone from 41 stone to 37 stone but seems to have stayed at that weight. Even the whole theme of the wedding is based around her love of chocolate as a day with a wedding planner reveals the famous purple cadburys colour is going to be the centrepiece colour of the wedding.

It is very interesting to note people’s reactions to both Sharon and Kate when both are out and about shopping in Cheltenham. They quickly realise that shopping for super sized people is very difficult. The UK really isn’t equipped for supersize shopping compared to America which really caters for serious plus sizes.

What becomes apparent very quickly is that there are no bridesmaids dresses that Kate can fit into. Even the ones that she is close to squeezing into are pretty horrific with regards to style and fashion. They have to go elsewhere to try and find them and they constantly seem to be out of breath.

When they both leave the shop to go elsewhere, they are stared at by everybody and have foul abusive language hurled at them. People constantly seem to be laughing at them. The insults fly non-stop and it even prompts Sharon to say “It’s as if I’m some kind of freak show that its OK to stare at”. Kate seems to get very upset and is very tempted to say something back to the abusive crowd but Sharon convinces her not to stop to their level.

Sharon and Kate also appeared on ITVs Good Morning Show which was presented by Eamon Holmes. They were featuring in a segment called “Britains Fattest Bride”. Even Eamon Holmes couldn’t suppress a smug smile when he saw Sharon in the wedding dress.

The whole point of appearing on the show was that Sharon would receive her wedding dress for free if she plugged the name of the company on the show. Whilst on the show Eamon Holmes brought up the topic of babies, Sharon admitted that her GP had told her than she would need to get down to 18 stone at least before she could contemplate having a child, so she would have to lose nearly 20 stone.

The following day herself and Kate went online to see what the feedback would be from the show. It was pretty mixed by all accounts. Many people said that she was really pretty whilst others were far more disparaging.

Some of the comments were
“There’s nothing beautiful about being a heart attack on legs”
“Fat people shouldn’t be allowed to have sex, what a disgusting thought”
“How can anyone think that its healthy, she weighs three times more than the average woman”
“If you want to be fat that’s up to you as long as you’re not squished next to me on a plane”

Many other comments picked up on the kids issue, that Sharon can’t have any at her current size. This is the one topic that really gets to Sharon as she desperately wants to have kids.

Even Kate realises that its time to talk to Sharon about her weight situation. She tells Sharon that she may not make it to 60 and that scares her a lot. Kate tries to push the Gastric Bypass Surgery but Sharon is having none of it. She is adamant that she wants to try and lose the weight herself before the wedding then she might contemplate surgery.

Diabetes is becoming a bigger problem day by day as it is so closely connected to Obesity. Within the last 3 decades diabetic levels have increased exponentially. Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which people have too much sugar in their blood.

Recent results have emerged though where Vitamin D supplements can help obese teens and children control their blood sugar levels. It is good to see these positive results instead of having to rely on prescription drugs to solve the problem. Catherine Peterson who is an associate professor of exercise, physiology and nutrition at the university of Missouri has stated that giving vitamin D was as effective as giving medication. There were decreases in insulin levels which meant better glucose control despite no changes in body weight, physical activity or dietary intake.

Vitamin D insufficiency is not unusual at all. It also helps to maintain healthy bones, nerves and muscles. Those people who are obese generally process Vitamin D differently to those who are a normal weight. It is processed half as effectively in obese people compared to people who are of a normal weight. So obese people need twice as much Vitamin D as it gets stored in the fat tissues.

Doubling up on Vitamin D is a far better idea than taking medication. It is an inexpensive and natural way to hep kids decrease the likelihood of obese teenagers and kids contracting diabetes. It also avoids the side effects that can come from having to take prescriptions in order to control their blood sugar levels

To really fix the weight problems we are encountering in society maybe we should look to the past rather than to the future. If you are to ever look at old films which are based in Italy or Greece you will see that the ones who were obese were people who had a huge amount of money and were gluttonous in the extreme.

Nowadays, it seems that these who are obese are the working class rather than the upper class. Now I know that statement may sound like a generalisation but there is an element of truth so it. With so much access to sugar foods and processed junk it is now easier than ever for anybody to eat poorly.

Solutions are constantly being bandied about such as taxing sugary beverages. Even in some US states such as Mississippi, they have passed a bill so that no federal restrictions can tell people what they can and can’t eat.

Rabbi Jonathan Crane who is a professor at Emory University believes we are approaching this dilemma from the wrong angle. He believes we should be looking at this from the point of satiety. Satiety is the feeling of being satisfied. Everybody has different types of satiety.

The Greeks, Buddhists, Confucians, Judaism and Christianity traditions all understood the concept of satiety thousands of years ago. The most interesting of them all though is probably the Talmuds.

The Talmuds were of the belief that we should only fill a third of our bodies with food, a third with drink and leave the other third empty. Satiety can definitely be achieved with a lot less food than we think. This ultimately means there would be less food eaten and less wasted.

Obviously this could only come about by personal choice. If we were to approach everything from the angle of are we satisfied rather than are we full then we are halfway there.
